Speedbird Z is a student engagement platform for British Airways based on Connectr Talent Technology’s cloud-based candidate experience and mentoring software. Launched in 2019, the name is a nod to generation Z and a BA aircraft call sign, the platform is a one-stop shop for students and has more than 25,000 active users. Through it, students can complete bitesize learning modules, access mentoring with real-life BA colleagues, and apply for work experience.
A link to the platform is included in all digital communications and in-person activities run by the Emerging Talent Team, and is also displayed on the BA corporate careers website, Instagram and TikTok accounts. The learning tasks are industry-focused, building students’ confidence; there are digital mentors sharing real-life experiences of working at BA; and work experience opportunities are advertised all year round. Furthermore, the platform allows the company to take its school engagement strategy to places it physically cannot attend.
The platform has been a huge success, with apprentices many times more likely to have received a job offer if they have completed a Speedbird Z learning module. Graduates have a better understanding of the business and the recruitment processes, and data tracking means the company can keep on top of its diversity goals. Student ambassadors give regular feedback to ensure the platform is relevant to the target audience, that the mentors represent the diverse workforce at BA, and accessibility is prioritised.
