Deloitte Brasil wins hearts and minds at careers fair

Monitoring candidates’ heart rates and comparing them to existing employees showed potential recruits there was nothing to fear.

Consulting firm Deloitte wanted to make an impact at the University of the South Pacific careers fair. It recognised that job searching can be nerve-wracking for students, and wanted to demonstrate that it understood and supported them. The company wanted to show students that nervousness about interviews were normal and even felt by more experienced professionals.

It introduced the Heartbit challenge, a three-minute, AI-driven interview where students wore pulse monitors that tracked their heartbeats. They wore headphones and interacted with an AI bot that asked them challenging questions, while their heartbeat data was compared to Deloitte professionals. This reassured students that their feelings were typical, and each student then left with a unique song and QR code detailing job opportunities.

Over the course of the fair, Deloitte conducted more than 2,000 interviews, and almost two-thirds applied for positions at Deloitte within a month. Almost all said they felt more prepared for job interviews after the experience, and overall job applications went up significantly year-on-year. The campaign successfully turned interview anxiety into a confidence-building experience, while showing that Deloitte understands and supports students at every step.
