Schoolchildren start to think about their career aspirations early, and many have fixed ideas about the jobs they can and cannot do long before they leave school. The Environment Agency recognised that many support environmentally responsible behaviour but did not know they could make a career out of it, or that the Environment Agency existed.
The organisation worked with TMPW to create Green Careers Live, an immersive event based in London’s Science Museum. This was designed to inspire school students and soon-to-be leavers to consider a career in maintaining a sustainable planet. Working with the museum gave the agency a perfect space but also the professional validation of a UK scientific heavyweight – something that would also influence parents and teachers.
A cast of illustrated characters – based on real Environment Agency professionals – made the event more approachable, while all of the event’s marketing materials were made of carefully sourced, reusable and environmentally friendly materials. Each visitor was handed an activity map and there were QR codes to watch films and learn more about the different jobs available. Activity areas covered different key aspects of working in sustainability, such as soil, water and food. The campaign has now gone on the road, going into schools across the country fronted by Agency staff. Almost 20,000 young people have taken part in the activities, and the organisation has been able to highlight the breadth and impact of its work.
